Since arrest and torture are occupational hazard for the activists in China, why some Chinese choose to be one?

Despite being aware of the occupational hazard of speaking up against the tyranny of the CCP despots, some Chinese choose to be activists. What is their motivation? Don't they fear inhuman torture and illegal detentions in the Chinese Bamboo gulags?
