New netgear router will not work with pc?

i recently decided to upgrade to a new wireless router.I got the netgear N600 dual band router from walmart for 90 bucks.My older wireless router was a cheap 35 dollar belkin.....i just needed the upgrade bc i had upgraded my broadband speed from 3 mbps to 6. turns out that the ethernet connection from the new router to the pc will not work!!....the pc is fairly new its a compaq presario with vista.when i connect the ethernet cable to the router the green light on the pc connection turns on and off for a few seconds and then it stops completely..the orange light does the same.on the router none of the #s ( 1,2,3,4 for the ethernet connection) turn on..not even an orange light.the only way the connection works is if i hook my old router to the new one and then connecting the pc with the older router via ethernet..............i just want to use my new!! router ....not the 2!! any suggestions would be very helpful..thanks in advance
